Former Spain international midfielder Xavi Hernandez insists the Spanish FA did the ‘right thing’ in dismissing Coach Julen Lopetegui.
Wednesday’s shock announcement confirmed the departure of the Coach, less than 24 hours after Real Madrid’s statement that he would move to the club upon the conclusion of the World Cup.
“I believe Luis Rubiales did the right thing and was looking out on behalf of the FA,” Xavi told reporters, as cited by Marca.
“The FA and the national team should be above any one person and whilst this was not the easy decision to make, it was the right one.
“All these players will have been through similar situations to this before but I do not believe it will stop them from enjoying a strong World Cup.”
Fernando Hierro, a former international teammate of Xavi’s, is now in the hot seat for the duration of the tournament in Russia.
