Girona: Machin joining Sevilla

Girona’s sporting director has confirmed that the ‘very organised and hardworking’ Pablo Machin will become Sevilla’s next Coach.

Reports emerged on Sunday that Machin had agreed a two-year contract with Sevilla, who only needed to pay Girona his €1m release clause, and Quique Carcel conceded defeat in his club’s attempts to keep the 43-year-old.

“We did everything possible to keep him,” he told ABC de Sevilla.

“Obviously, we’re aware of everything that’s happening. We can only thank Machin. That’s football and we knew what could happen.

“He wanted to make the jump and that’s it. We were always clear that it should be our priority for Machin to stay.

“We offered him a three-year contract, but then Sevilla emerged… It’s clear that it’s a setback for us.

“We had everything ready and his style of play was very much embedded here. He’s a very organised, hardworking Coach. He likes to have everything under control.

“In addition, it gives a lot of importance to strategy. His system is very defined. He’s not a Coach who suddenly switches from one system to another.

“Here, at least, he’s never done it. The three centre-backs and positions of the players have always been the same.

“Another thing I rate about Machin is his ability to get through to his players. He’s a great Coach and I hope he does well at Sevilla.”
