Segunda: Rayo up, Barca B down!

A dramatic penultimate matchday in the Segunda Division saw Rayo Vallecano clinch promotion to La Liga and Barcelona B drop back into the third tier.

Alex Moreno’s 40th-minute goal earned Rayo a 1-0 win against Lugo on Sunday, which was enough for them to secure a top-two place.

Los Vallecanos were relegated to La Segunda in 2016 and could only finish 12th in their first season back in the division.

However, their fortunes were turned around by Coach Michel Sanchez – a former Rayo midfielder – and Real Madrid loanee Raul de Tomas, who has 24 goals in 2017-18.

Possibly joining Rayo and Huesca in La Liga next term are Sporting Gijon and Real Zaragoza, both of whom achieved playoff spots with victories over Granada and Real Valladolid respectively.

On the other hand, Barca B’s stay in the second tier lasted only a season as they could only draw 0-0 with fellow strugglers Albacete.

That came in contrast to Cordoba, who look to have pulled off the great escape as they beat Reus 2-1 for their third straight win to pull themselves out of the bottom three.
