Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of former youth product Rodri Hernandez from Villarreal on a five-year contract.

The 21-year-old spent six years at Atleti’s academy before joining the Yellow Submarine in 2013 and has gone on to make 85 appearances for the club, scoring four goals.

Los Rojiblancos published a statement on their website on Thursday which confirmed the move, which is thought to be for an initial €20m fee with a further €5m in performance-related add-ons.

Rodri made his Spain debut in March, appearing in the 1-1 friendly draw against Germany. He previously won the European Under-19 Championship with Spain in 2015.

The midfielder is seen as a natural long-term replacement for Gabi in Atleti’s squad and the successor for Sergio Busquets with Spain.
