Real Sociedad have confirmed the appointment of former Leganes Coach Asier Garitano on a three-year contract.

The 48-year-old Basque has signed a deal tying him to the Spanish club until June 30, 2021, Sociedad announced on their club website.

La Real had dismissed Eusebio Sacristan back in March with Imanol Alguacil appointed on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.

The San Sebastian club had a hugely disappointing campaign, finishing 12th in La Liga and suffering an early exit from the Europa League, having finished sixth the previous season.

Garitano had spent the last five years in charge of surprise package Leganes, guiding Los Pepineros from the third tier to the Spanish top flight for the first time in their history.

Under Garitano, Leganes also reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey for the first time this year, knocking out neighbours Real Madrid in the process.
