Saul: I want to convince Lopetegui

Saul Niguez says he wants to give Spain national team boss Julen Lopetegui a selection headache ahead of the World Cup.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder said he is excited to be able to help La Roja lift what would be a second World Cup title, whilst declaring that he has the opportunity to be a starter in the team ‘because I am in the squad’.

“There are two friendlies and several training sessions for me to convince the Coach and make things difficult for him,” maintained Saul in an interview with Radio Marca.

“Julen has the power to decide, but I’m going to contribute and try to help Spain get that second star on our shirts, because nothing would make me more excited than that.

“Lopetegui has got the whole of Spain back behind the national team again. The last World Cup was a tremendous disappointment for all Spaniards, but Julen and this new generation have given us great hope and we can play a pivotal role.”

Elche-born Saul feels ‘Germany, Brazil and France will be our great rivals’, although he added that if Spain play well ‘it is hard to compete with us because of our style of play’.

“If there is a team that can take the ball away from us then it’s possible we will suffer, but that will be hard with the players we have,” he argued.
