Aspas: World Cup spot like a dream

Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas has described his inclusion in Spain’s World Cup squad as being ‘beyond my wildest dreams’.

The 30-year-old netted 22 goals in 33 La Liga starts this season for the Galician side and is one of three strikers in Julen Lopetegui’s squad, alongside Diego Costa and Rodrigo Moreno.

“Four years ago I watched the World Cup on the TV, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be at the next one,” Aspas told an interview with La Voz de Galicia.

“Back then I was in Seville and I was not enjoying the minutes I wanted but now the situation has changed completely.

“It was a great season for me on an individual level, but not on the collective one even though I am happy to finish the season with the most goals.

“I always knew making this list would be hard to happen because of the squad and selection of players we have, so it is a really proud achievement for me.

“I think I have done my job this season, I have scored the maximum number of goals this season and provided assists, so it is true that I have performed well.

“We are in the strongest group because you just need to look at the numbers in the qualifying phase and the friendly matches each team has played.”
