Huesca win historic promotion

Huesca secured their first ever promotion to Spain’s top flight with a 2-0 victory at Lugo on Monday night, sparking wild celebrations.

Goals from Alex Gallar and Jorge Pulido (pictured) secured victory for the team from Northeastern Spain, to ensure they were the first team to secure promotion, with two games remaining.

Last season Huesca – who were promoted to the second tier in 2015 – qualified for the promotion playoffs but lost out at the semi-final stage to Tenerife.

“We fought hard for this, it's well-deserved,” said Gallar, as cited by Associated Press.

“I can't believe it. Huesca is a first-division team. It's historic. It's time to celebrate.”

Malaga, Deportivo La Coruna and Las Palmas were the teams relegated to the Segunda division from La Liga this season.

Rayo Vallecano currently sit second in the division and need just two points to clinch promotion, while Sporting Gijon, Real Zaragoza, Valladolid and Cadiz occupy the playoff positions.
