Andres Iniesta has vowed to ‘carry all my fans in my heart forever’ after bidding a final farewell to Barcelona on Sunday.
Barca gave Iniesta a spectacular send-off at Camp Nou, where they beat Real Sociedad 1-0, as the Catalans celebrated the midfielder’s legacy with pyrotechnics, while chants of the 34-year-old’s name rang throughout.
“It’s a mythical day. These have been 22 wonderful years,” he remarked.
“It’s been a source of pride and a pleasure to defend this club who, for me, are the best in the world. Thanks to each and every one of my teammates.
“I’m going to miss you all so much. And thanks to you, to my fans, for all the affection and respect that you’ve shown me since I came here as a child.
“I leave here as a man. Thank you for asking me insistently to stay. I can only say that I’ll carry you all in my heart forever.
“To finish, I’ve run out of words to describe this past week. Visca Barca, Visca Catalunya and Visca Fuentealbilla!”
