Granell: Girona’s best-ever

Girona captain Alex Granell has described this season as the best in the club’s history.

Despite the Catalans finding out this week that their bid for a Europa League place had been unsuccessful, following Sevilla’s defeat of Real Madrid, Granell {pictured, left} could not hide his delight at the way things had gone in their first-ever campaign in the top flight.

“Without doubt this is the best season in the history of this club,” said the 29-year-old, who joined then Segunda outfit Girona in 2014 from third division team AE Prat.

“We were aware that safety was more an illusion than an objective, but we achieved that with a lot of credit. We now have two games left, the first of them at Montilivi against Valencia, and I hope we see the stadium full again like on the great occasions.

“It should be a festive atmosphere and we’ll celebrate with a party afterwards, which will be a tribute to both the fans and the players. We want there to be total union between us,” he added.
