Ziganda ‘understands’ Athletic axe

Jose Angel Ziganda says he understands why he will no longer be in charge at Athletic Bilbao next season.

The former Bilbao striker was informed this week by President Josu Urrutia that, along with his backroom staff, he will be relieved of his duties after the last game, having been appointed boss at the beginning of what was ultimately a disappointing campaign.

“I had always hoped to turn the situation around but I understand the decision and the most important thing is the club,” Ziganda told a Press conference which was also attended by the playing staff, who gave him an ovation afterwards.

“Whoever is the Coach needs all the support he can get and for all the cards to fall into place, but I lost some of that. However, I tried to improve the style of play results and achieve our objectives.

“Before the defeats to Deportivo and Levante I saw that things would be difficult. There was a lot of inconsistency and bad feeling, but I didn’t have a bad relationship with the players.

“When I changed Benat he got angry, and that’s good up to a point, while Aduriz has scored 20 goals this season, which isn’t bad.

“But you start to fail when you start looking to blame people for your defeats,” he explained.
