Ramos suffers Sevilla nightmare

Sergio Ramos suffered a nightmare return to Sevilla as Real Madrid fell to a 3-2 defeat on Wednesday evening.

Ramos missed a penalty, picked up a yellow card for handball and scored a own goal in a disastrous night for him and Madrid, while Sevilla made it back-to-back wins under Joaquin Caparros to move into a Europa League spot.

Zinedine Zidane called on his second string in Andalusia, with Gareth Bale banned and Cristiano Ronaldo injured. The hosts, on the other hand, went with Luis Muriel and Wissam Ben Yedder up top, in a clear sign of their intentions.

The long ball proved to be Madrid's undoing as Ben Yedder sprung their high line at the back and slotted a finish past Kiko Casilla, midway through the first half.

Nacho Fernandez was on hand to scramble Franco Vazquez's shot off the line, but he could only watch Miguel Layun drive Steven N'Zonzi's layoff into the roof of Casilla's net just before the break.

Los Blancos suddenly had a mountain to climb after the restart, but they were handed a reprieve when Franco Vazquez tripped namesake Lucas in Sevilla's box.

However, unlike last season's 3-3 draw at Sanchez Pizjuan, Ramos blasted his spot-kick on to the crossbar, and that triggered an unfortunate sequence of events.

Indeed, the former Sevilla defender went on to pick up a yellow card for handball and deflect Gabi Mercado's cross-shot into his own net.

Madrid did show some fight near the end, and Ramos was able to make amends from the spot, despite Theo Hernandez not covering himself in much glory when he tangled with Mercado, before substitute Borja Mayoral headed in a cross.
