Ulreich: Mistake was my fate…

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sven Ulreich believes his high-profile error against Real Madrid on Tuesday night was due to ‘fate’.

The German shot-stopper slipped when presented with a simple back pass to allow Karim Benzema to nip in and give Madrid the lead during the second leg of the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

“For goalkeepers, mistakes are our fate,” Ulreich is cited as saying by El Mundo Deportivo.

“If a striker fails it isn’t much trouble, if a defender fails it’s worse than a striker but goalkeepers can’t afford to fail. For eight months I didn’t fail and it’s a shame it happened now.

“They were a few milliseconds, where I had two thoughts but not enough time to decide. I’ve seen the replay once or twice, in 100 situations, this error would happen once.

“The ball was passed back to me and I saw Benzema coming my way and I tried to position myself for one on one but I thought: “no, I can’t touch it with my hands”, then I wanted to clear it with my foot but Benzema was close already.”
