Celta Vigo to dismiss Unzue

Celta Vigo will dismiss Coach Juan Carlos Unzue at the end of the campaign due to a failure to qualify for Europe, say reports in the Spanish press.

The 51-year-old replaced Eduardo Berizzo at the Galician club last summer but has failed to meet his primary targets of a cup success or qualification for European football.

A report in Marca now outlines how the club have decided to dispense with his services with Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Villarreal the latest damaging result.

Celta languish in 11th but remain only four points off a European spot, but qualification remains unlikely as they need the four teams directly above them to drop points.

The former goalkeeper, who was previously Luis Enrique’s number two, has not proved a popular figure with fans of Os Celeste.

Reports over his dismissal centre on the lack of chances for many players, most notably Turkish winger Emre Mor, who joined the club from Borussia Dortmund for €15m last summer.
