Ziganda: I’m responsible for Athletic season

Athletic Club Bilbao Coach Jose Angel Ziganda has taken ‘full responsibility’ for the club’s ‘tough’ season after Monday’s defeat to Levante.

The Basque giants languish in 14th spot in La Liga and have won just five of their 17 home games this season while they also suffered early eliminations in the Copa del Rey and Europa League.

“We are in a tough situation and I take full responsibility for this,” Ziganda told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“I am the Coach of this game, I am here to win game and to lead my team but not everything has worked out, and that has to be the culpability of me.

“It is tough when you are in a run like this but we must continue to work hard and stay focused, to look to our next game and try to change the mood and make our fans happy.

“We know what sort of match the derby will be, we know how much our games at the Anoeta mean to our fans and we must try to match their expectations with everything we have.

“This defeat (to Levante) is tough to take and once again showed we have no consistency even during games – we had good moments but could not carry through.

“We started well and tried to control the game but they were playing for their lives and we could not show any fluency.”
