Espanyol dent Girona’s Euro hopes

Manager-less Espanyol triumphed in Sunday’s Catalan derby to deal a blow to Girona’s European hopes this season.

Gerard Moreno netted either side of half-time as interim Coach David Gallego got off to a winning start following Quique Sanchez Flores’s dismissal on Friday.

Going into this game, Espanyol had gone five games without scoring a goal while their only previous victory on the road this season came at basement side Malaga.

Moreno’s fine form this season continued as he netted both goals to put a major dent in Girona’s ambitions of a Europa League finish this season.

Espanyol are still not mathematically safe from relegation but are now 11 points clear of the drop zone with four matches remaining.
