Zidane ‘prefers La Liga to UCL’

Zinedine Zidane would prefer Real Madrid to be winning La Liga ahead of any other trophy as it ‘motivates me and the players’ the most.

Los Blancos landed last year’s league title but find themselves 15 points behind league leaders Barcelona this time round, while they can still win their fourth Champions League trophy in five seasons.

“When you start the season, you want to win every trophy you play in,” Zidane told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“The idea of winning La Liga motivates me the most and I believe the players feel this too, but there are times when you have problems and for us this year we did not score enough goals earlier in the season.

“However, the club has an incredible history in the Champions League which cannot be explained.”

Madrid have defensive problems for the second leg – captain Sergio Ramos is suspended while Nacho Fernandez is injured, meaning Jesus Vallejo is likely to start alongside Raphael Varane.

“Jesus trained well and did not feel any discomfort,” Zidane added.

“We will assess the situation before the match and if we need to adapt, so be it.”
