Atleti on course for semi-final spot

Koke opened the scoring after just 22 seconds as Atletico Madrid beat Sporting CP 2-0 to put themselves on course for the Europa League semi-finals.

Diego Costa took advantage of an error from the Portuguese defence to set Koke up straight away before Antoine Griezmann doubled the scoring five minutes before the break.

Costa missed two glorious chances to add a third in the second half as the visitor’s backline continued to be exposed, yet no more goals were forthcoming.

Atleti – who won the Europa League title in both 2010 and 2012 – have now won their last nine consecutive matches at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The second leg takes places in Lisbon on 12 April.
