Sevilla have a mountain to climb in the Champions League quarter-finals after Bayern Munich came back from behind to win Tuesday’s first leg 2-1.
Sevilla deservedly went ahead through Pablo Sarabia, who took down a square ball at the far post and coolly volleyed past Sven Ulreich.
However, just six minutes later, Franck Ribery drew Bayern level, his curling finish deflecting past David Soria – in for Sergio Rico – at his near post.
Soria made amends by tipping over Javi Martinez’s close-range volley, but the goalkeeper was wrong-footed by Thiago Alcantara’s bouncing header.
“We didn’t have any luck. The team played with their weapons against a very strong Bayern,” said Andalusians boss Vincenzo Montella after the game.
“Our opponents had no chances in the first half, while we were very dangerous. It’s a shame, but we’ll fight to the end.
“We didn’t have any luck for Bayern’s first or second goal, but we have to accept it. We were a bit tired in the second half, but it’s normal.
“The team used up a lot of energy in the first half and we hardly posed a threat in the second half, but I have to say that the team played with a lot of pride.
“David Soria? He had a good game, certainly. It’s my job, I have to decide [who plays in goal] but I have no problem with it.”
