Diego Simeone insists ‘it’s a virtue of ours’ that Atletico Madrid scrape victories after their 1-0 win against Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday.
Kevin Gameiro’s first-half penalty was enough to keep Atleti clear of arch-rivals Real Madrid in second, and Simeone was relieved to see his side pull through their first game after the international break.
“Coming back from an international break with the World Cup so close isn’t easy,” the Coach said after the match.
“We had difficulties with players who were banned and had injuries, but we responded with the result.
“The first half was better than the second. We scored the goal and we could’ve taken more of our chances.
“We faced a team with needs and we couldn’t kill game off. Did we scrape the win? It’s true, we won 1-0, but it’s a virtue of ours.
“The penalty? I was very far away from it and didn’t see it clearly.”
