Messi salvages Sevilla point

Lionel Messi saved Barcelona yet again, coming off the bench to rescue a 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Saturday and maintain their unbeaten Liga run.

Sevilla had taken a 2-0 lead through ex-Serie A pair Franco Vazquez and Luis Muriel, but a double-goal salvo from Luis Suarez and Messi with only a minute remaining left the Andalusians lamenting what could've been.

The Catalans started without Messi in a 4-3-3 as Ousmane Dembele took his place on the right wing and Paulinho continued to deputise for Sergio Busquets in central midfield.

Sevilla, on the other hand, stuck with Luis Muriel over Old Trafford hero Wissam Ben Yedder up top, in what was a dress rehearsal for the Copa del Rey Final.

It looked to have been a case of no Messi, no party for Barca, who were lucky to see Muriel and Joaquin Correa squander two free headers early on.

However, the Catalans' defence was caught ball-watching when Correa's cutback was turned by an unopposed Vazquez in the six-yard box.

Just five minutes into the restart, the Argentine was at it again, his powerful drive blocked by Marc-Andre ter Stegen but only as far as Muriel, whose rebound deflected in.

Messi was quickly thrown on, but he initially struggled to make an impact, with the Andalusians still on top as Correa slammed a shot into side-netting and Ter Stegen had to tip away Jesus Navas' angled volley.

Nonetheless, Ivan Rakitic's glancing header hitting the post was followed by Suarez acrobatically netting from a corner and No 10 doing what he did best, unleashing a first-time curler past Sergio Rico from 20 yards out.
