Lopetegui: No final squad decisions

Julen Lopetegui has played down talk of finalising his 23-man squad for the summer World Cup following the 6-1 thrashing of Argentina.

Much of the discussion has focused onto Spain’s striking situation – they are expected to take just three strikers in their squad, with one high-profile absentee expected.

When quizzed by Cadena Cope if he can fit the four strikers (Diego Costa, Rodrigo Moreno, Iago Aspas and Alvaro Morata) in his squad, he replied: “Now is not the time to make decisions, we will continue to analyse our options.

“Isco? He is a very important player for us and we are delighted with his performance level, which he is always capable of and which is very high.

“It was a fantastic result against a magnificent team, one who made the last World Cup final and two Copa America finals, although they had important absentees.

“World Cup favourites? If people are saying this then that is good as my boys have earned such talk with their performances, but we have zero points and have achieved nothing.

“I am glad Pique was applauded as he came off, he deserves it totally. He played both games despite fitness issues – nobody can doubt his commitment.”
