Seedorf: Not thinking about relegation

Clarence Seedorf insists he is not thinking about the prospect of coaching Deportivo La Coruna in the Segunda but wonders ‘if I’d taken preseason…’

Seedorf has yet to preside over a win in his seven games as Depor boss, with the Galicians seven points adrift going into the final nine rounds of the season, but the Dutchman was adamant his side had shown what it took to pull off a great escape in La Liga.

“It’s been a very intense couple of months, with a lot of work, complicated situations and many aspects needing to be corrected and implemented,” he told Marca.

“Did I think it’d be so difficult to win a game? The truth is, I didn’t. It’s true that we’ve had some good games, which we’ve deserved to win, even by more than one goal, but in others we made mistakes that cost us very dearly, like against Girona and Getafe.

“I don’t think we’re seeing the Depor I want. The situation would’ve been different if I’d taken preseason.

“Now there are needs and more telling things to improve on. It’s difficult to be happy if you think about your problems.

“If I’d led this team last summer, we wouldn’t be fighting in these positions, but that’s also fantasy because it didn’t happen, neither do I know if it would’ve happened…

“The truth is no team have dominated us and that we’ve shown signs of improvement, but we need to win so that our fortunes change.

“Coaching in Segunda? It’s not an issue that matters to me now. I have a contract until June 30 and I want to keep Deportivo up. I don’t accept the thought that we’ll go down.”
