Lopetegui hails Spain ‘ambition’

Julen Lopetegui hailed the ‘ambition’ of his Spain players after they held Germany to a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Moreno had given Spain the lead in their first World Cup warm-up friendly, but La Roja were to be denied the win by Thomas Muller’s long-range drive.

Nonetheless, the Coach said after the game: “We leave here with very good feelings.

“We played against the world champions, who were very motivated. We had a good match, with chances to win it, although they also had chances of their own.

“Trying to dominate here for 90 is complex, but we played with ambition. Germany are quicker and physically stronger than us.

“They’re more comfortable than us during transitions. We played with pace and profundity in the opening 30 minutes and avoided their transitions.

“However, they had their moment and were able to run at us. When they’re able to run, they’re more dangerous.

“We had chances to score the second goal, but it was a nice and open match for spectators, each team had their own style and had good players. It was a good show.

“I’m happy with the performance of the whole team, although there were things that were more positive than others in the match.

“Playing against the best teams in the world is a very nice challenge, and we took it as such. We played our game with confidence.

“Certaintly it’d be different in a World Cup match, but neither of us treated the match as a friendly but with rigour and ambition.”
