Rodrigo Moreno dedicated his goal during Spain’s 1-1 draw with Germany to the son of ex-Valencia goalkeeper Santiago Canizares, who died before the game.
Canizares confirmed on Friday that his five-year-old son lost his battle with a serious illness, prompting Rodrigo and his Roja teammates to wear black armbands during their friendly in Dusseldorf.
“It was a match of a very high level against a great team and we had a great game,” the Valencia striker told Telecinco after the match.
“We had the better chances to win the match, but it was a good test. I try to do my best for the team on the pitch, and it was a good match on both an individual and collective level.
“I dedicated my goal to Santi Canizares. We all know what happened to his son, and we’re all with him at this time.”
