‘Saudi intervention in La Liga wrong’

The Spanish players’ union has accused La Liga of disrespecting home-grown talent after it paid clubs to sign Saudi players in January.

La Liga reportedly paid Villarreal, Leganes and Levante €1m each to bring in Saudi Arabia trio Salem Al-Dawsari, Yahia Al-Shehri and Fahad Al-Muwallad respectively, but David Aganzo believes the trio – who have yet to make an appearance – have unfairly blocked opportunities for Spanish players.

“What I’d like is for things not to happen like they did with the Saudis,” the former Real Madrid striker, now technical secretary of the AFE, told Radio Marca.

“Football isn’t just about money but also values. I’ve spoken to [La Liga chief Javier] Tebas about it and for me, football can’t be managed this way.

“It’s a lack of respect to the youngsters and those playing in the lower Leagues.”
