Meek Athletic exit Europa League

Athletic Bilbao crashed out of the Europa League following a meek 5-2 aggregate loss to Marseille at the last 16 stage.

The French club leg 3-1 from last week’s first leg and they took control of the tie at San Mames with goals from Dimitri Payet and Lucas Ocampos either side of the break.

Inaki Williams pulled one back for the Basque giants 16 minutes from time to give them a brief glimmer of hope but two minutes later striker Aritz Aduriz was sent-off.

Aduriz was dismissed for a second yellow card after a poorly-timed tackle on Ocampos, to dispel any hope of progression for the 2012 finalists.

The visitor’s victory was marred by reports of crowd trouble from their fans, with UEFA sanctions now likely.
