Spain lose out on Lucas – report

Spain appear to have lost out to France for Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez, according to reports in the Spanish press.

Last month it was reported 22-year-old was in the final stages of formalising his Spanish citizenship documents despite representing France for five years at youth level.

However, Onda Cero now report the central defender has been called up by Didier Deschamps for France’s friendlies this month and whilst this would not rule him out of playing for Spain, as the games are not competitive, it is a sign of the player’s future.

The left-sided defender played up to Under-21 level with Les Bleus while his brother, Theo – a Real Madrid full-back – is also said to be weighing up which national side to represent.
