Aduriz penalty gives Athletic hope

Aritz Aduriz (pictured) netted a consolation penalty to give Athletic Bilbao hope despite a comprehensive 3-1 loss at Marseille on Thursday.

The hosts dominated the match with Lucas Ocampos netting twice and Dimitri Payet’s superb strike seemingly put them on course for qualification.

However, as the game approached half time and with the Basque giants two goals down, a controversial penalty was awarded for an alleged handball from Marseille’s Adil Rami.

The former Sevilla defender appeared to block Aduriz’s effort with his arm and despite the referee initially not acknowledging the appeals, he then awarded a spot-kick, which Aduriz netted.

Ocampos opened the scoring after 44 seconds before Payet soon doubled the lead with a magnificent strike to put the Ligue 1 club in command.

A second half error from Athletic goalkeeper Iago Herrerin allowed a weak effort from Ocampos in the second half to squirm under his right glove to make it 3-1.
