Atletico interest in Max Meyer

Atletico Madrid are hopeful of landing Schalke midfielder Max Meyer on a free transfer this summer, according to reports.

The 22-year-old is out of contract at the Gelsenkirchen-based club in June and there are no indications he will renew his deal at this late stage.

Diario AS cite a report in German publication Bild that Los Rojiblancos have moved into prime position to land the midfielder from Schalke, who are already losing Leon Goretzka to Bayern Munich on a free.

The report indicates that following the departure of Yannick Carrasco, Nico Gaitain and Augusto Fernandez in January, Atleti are keen to bolster a squad which contains just 17 outfield players.

Diego Simeone is also said to be concerned about the age profile in his squad and Meyer ‘would assist in rejuvenating’ his ranks.

Meyer is adaptable but is primarily an attacking midfielder, with Barcelona among the other clubs linked to his signature.
