Girona: From relegation to Europe

Girona boss Pablo Machin says his side now have Europe “in their sights” after the Catalans reached the magical 40-point barrier.

Cristhian Stuani’s 14th League goal of the season, plus a finish from Anthony Lozano, defeated Villarreal 2-0 on Saturday, leaving Girona just one point off a Europa League place in seventh.

However, the result meant the Blanquivermell became the quickest, newly-promoted team in La Liga history to reach 40 points – commonly noted as the objective for survival.

“I’ve told the lads that the 40 points is an objective fulfilled,” the Coach said after the game.

“We’ll achieve more, but we’ve met the first objective. We’ve earned the right to be in Primera for another season.

“When you see the table, we’ve set ourselves the challenge of always winning our next game. When we have five games left, we’ll see if Europe is in our sights.”
