Valencia moved to within a point of third-placed Real Madrid as they secured a 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night.

Los Che were hopeful of leapfrogging Zinedine Zidane’s side in the table with a victory at the San Mames and were put on course through Geoffrey Kondogbia’s first half strike.

However, Oscar de Marcos struck for the Basque giants four minutes after the break to level the scores and ensure the spoils were shared.

Athletic had spurned a penalty before the break when Aritz Aduriz’s effort was saved by Valencia goalkeeper Neto, after Jeison Murillo had brought down Markel Susaeta inside the area.

Athletic remain 12th in La Liga.
