Villarreal crash out of Europa League

Villarreal crashed out of the Europa League at the last 32 stage after suffering a 4-1 aggregate defeat to Ligue 1 side Lyon.

The French club won the opening leg 3-1 and sealed their progression with a 1-0 victory at Estadio de la Ceramica thanks to Bertrand Traore’s winner five minutes from time.

Traore – who featured in last year’s Europa League final for Ajax – settled the tie with a close-range finish, seven minutes after Jaume Costa had been dismissed for the hosts.

It was an entertaining clash despite the lack of goals, with the Yellow Submarine registering 11 shots as they attempted to launch a comeback yet were ultimately unsuccessful.
