‘Bad news for Marcelo, very bad’

Emilio Butragueno believes Marcelo having to be substituted in Real Madrid’s win over Real Betis is a sign of ‘very bad news.’

The Brazil left-back was withdrawn in the first half with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and speaking after Los Blancos’ 5-3 win at Benito Villamarin, Butragueno was pessimistic.

“We have to wait and see what the doctors say. He had to go off the pitch and the news is bad, very bad. In 48 hours we’ll know the exact extent of the injury,” he said, AS reports, before touching on a possible injury suffered by Nacho.

“Nacho went down and stayed down but he’s come back feeling normal so hopefully it was only a knock.”

The match itself was an eight-goal thriller and Butragueno praised Betis’ endeavour and two-goal Marco Asensio for stepping up after being named in the starting XI.

“We started well and went ahead. Betis were extraordinary. We were brilliant in 20 minutes of the second half. We got the ball from them, we pressed and we created chances,” he continued.

“That’s where the match was decided. Even so, Quique Setien is doing a good job and they always have conviction. It was very good for the viewers. The team knew how to react.

“Asensio showed he can be counted on. His run for the second goal was very good. Games like today help him tell everyone that he’s available.”
