Girona beat Leganes to go eighth

Goals by Cristhian Stuani, Portu and Juanpe Ramirez gave Girona a 3-0 win over Leganes in Friday night’s La Liga action.

It was yet another impressive display by Pablo Machin’s team, who have confounded their critics all season and now lie eighth in the table – just one point shy of a possible Europa League place.

Stuani’s 23rd minute penalty got the hosts up and running against a Leganes team who themselves have performed above expectations to sit comfortably in mid-table.

The Catalan side doubled their lead ten minutes before half-time, with Portu racing clear on the counter-attack to plant a confident finish past visiting goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar.

Leganes tried in vain to work their way back into the contest in the second half, with Ramirez’s late header sealing Girona’s victory.

Remarkably, the win means the hosts have now won four consecutive matches at their Estadi Montilivi home without conceding a goal.
