Ander Herrera: My conscience is clear

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has denied any part in match fixing allegations in Spain: “my conscience is totally clear.”

The allegations relate to Herrera’s Real Zaragoza defeat of Levante in La Liga in 2011, a victory which saw the club retain their top-flight status at the expense of Deportivo La Coruna.

A reported €1m was allegedly paid from Zaragoza to Levante in order for the result to happen, with El Pais reporting the Zaragoza players – who also included Atletico Madrid captain Gabi - may have acted as intermediaries in the payment.

“'I have never had and will never have anything to do with manipulating match results,” Herrera told reporters, as cited by the Daily Mail.

“If I am ever called to testify in any judicial hearing, I'll be happy to attend, as my conscience is totally clear.

“I love football and I believe in fair play, both on and off the pitch.”

Herrera went on to join Athletic Bilbao before moving to Old Trafford in the summer of 2014.
