Diego Simeone has assured that Kevin Gameiro is still “very important” to Atletico Madrid after his winner against Eibar on Saturday.
Gameiro replaced the banned Diego Costa in Atleti’s attack and netted the only goal of the game in the 27th minute to defeat Eibar and keep Los Rojiblancos second in La Liga.
“We were better than Eibar in the first half,” the Coach said after the game.
“We got the goal and had chances to go into half-time with a bigger lead. We put together some tremendous counterattacks and caused them a lot of problems.
“What happened in the second half happened because when you face a tough and difficult team like Eibar, they can grow as the minutes pass.
“We sought refuge because we saw that our counterattacks weren’t the same as those in the first half.
“We decided to lock ourselves down in order to break their momentum. Fair win? Neither when I win nor when I lose do I speak of justice. The result is what it is.
“Gameiro? He’s a very important player for us, and he has tremendous pace in the final third.”
