English quartet chase Gaitan

A quartet of English Premier League clubs will do battle to sign Atletico Madrid playmaker Nicolas Gaitan in January, say reports in Spain.

The Argentine has started only 12 La Liga games since arriving at Atleti from Benfica in the summer of 2016, including just once this season to date.

The 29-year-old is not ruling out a late push for Argentina’s World Cup squad in summer but is aware he must play regular football if he is to be in the frame.

A report in Diario AS lists Everton, West Ham, Southampton and Crystal Palace as the interested parties, with England said to be his preferred destination.

There is also reported interest from Turkey – where Fenerbahce are said to be monitoring the situation – along with Mexican club Monterrey.

Vitolo and Diego Costa are registered to play for Atleti starting in January with a series of player departures expected.
