Valverde: Clasico win ‘a lesson’

Ernesto Valverde claims Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in Saturday’s Clasico “is a lesson for everyone” who doubted them after the Supercopa.

Barca were written off by many after their 5-1 defeat to Madrid over two legs back in August, but they have since moved nine points clear at the top of La Liga and opened a 14-point lead on Los Blancos.

“It’s a lesson for everyone,” the Coach said after the game.

“They played very well against us in preseason and we did so today. Football has a lot of twists and turns.

“I don’t think we have one foot on the League title, we’re not even halfway through the season yet. There are two games left to play in the first round.

“There’s still a long way to go. We’re top and by a certain distance, but it doesn’t mean anything. Nothing’s been decided, there’s still winter and spring ahead of us.

“We had problems in the first half because of their high press, so we had to be patient, even if it meant we didn’t see much of the ball.

“In the second half, we had control of the game and ball, and from there came our chances and the penalty, which left them a man down.

However, the Basque was disappointed with how the Blaugrana reacted to Dani Carvajal’s red card.

“We didn’t kill the game off after that and we became confused,” he added.

“We had possession in our half of the pitch but didn’t opt to attack and they had more chances with 10 men. It was a mistake on our part.”
