Iago Aspas wants Spain spot

Iago Aspas wants to consolidate his place in Spain’s squad after winning the Zarra Award for the highest scorer by a Spanish player in La Liga.

The 30-year-old former Sevilla and Liverpool forward netted 19 goals in the league last season and helped Celta Vigo to the semi-finals of the Europa League and Copa del Rey.

“My main aim is to cement my place in the national time,” Aspas said upon receiving his award.

“There are many players who also have that aim in my position and I will have to continue to work very hard to convince the Coach.

“I am very proud of receiving this award and I want to thank all my teammates who have helped me, it is the reward for a great season of all the players.

“2017 was a very good year for us as we got to the brink of two cup finals – the Copa Del Rey and Europa League…it was so close and yet so far!

“We want to go one step further this season and reach the final (of the Copa Del Rey) but it will be difficult with drawing Barcelona, although in recent years we have defeated Real Madrid and Atletico.”
