Atleti look to Fabinho deal

Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are both expected to go head-to-head for Monaco midfielder Fabinho next summer, say reports.

The Brazilian stayed on with the French champions this summer despite a raft of star exits and he has admitted he looks set to leave the club in summer with Diego Simeone’s side one of a number of options.

“It's a possibility, but no one from Atletico has spoken to me or my agent,” Fabinho told L’Equipe, in quotes carried by ESPN.

“We're talking about the summer transfer window, but a lot of things can happen between now and then.

“I'll have to show that I have the level to play in teams like that. We'll talk about that in May.

“Normally, it's my last season at Monaco. I don't think there's the possibility to leave before, I've not had any contact and I haven't asked to leave in January.

“I'm calm at Monaco, and I wouldn't be able to play in the Champions League with another team.

“During the transfer window and even in the month after, it was a difficult situation to handle, I should have left, I didn't leave. But I'm not thinking about that any more – the page has been turned.

“I'm focused on Monaco, but I know I'm not the Fabinho of last season. I'm not in a bad spell, but I'm not back to my best. I'm not able to do the same things as last season.

“In my head, I know I must do better, improve, help the team play better and win matches.”
