La Liga Wk14: Sevilla win again

Sevilla made it three straight victories in La Liga Week 14, while there was no end to Villarreal or Real Betis’ misery.

The weekend started at La Rosaleda, where a goalless draw was played out between Malaga and Levante on Friday

Despite Malaga bossing possession and cracking 16 attempts at Oier Olazabal’s goal, Levante showed the necessary resilience to extend their unbeaten run away from home to five games.

Saturday began with Sevilla comfortably seeing off Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 in their first match since Coach Eduardo Berizzo stepped aside for cancer treatment.

Goals from Wissam Ben Yedder and Michael Krohn-Dehli – his first League goal in over two years – either side of half-time moved the Andalusians seven points clear in fifth place.

Leganes, meanwhile, ended a run of four straight defeats after they came back from behind to beat Villarreal 3-1.

The Yellow Submarine had also gone three games without a win, and they looked like arresting that sequence when Dani Raba broke his duck in La Liga on the hour mark.

However, three goals from Diego Rico, Nabil El Zhar and Gabriel in the final 18 minutes stunned the visitors as Leganes leapfrogged into seventh.

Eibar piled the pressure on Quique Sanchez Flores after they inflicted a 3-1 loss on his Espanyol side.

Espanyol started the match two points and as many places above Eibar in La Liga, but the Basque flew out the traps and took a ninth-minute lead through Kike Garcia.

Ivi Alejo and a Joan Jordan penalty against his former team then ensured Sergi Enrich’s own goal was in vain as the Catalans crashed to a third League defeat in four.

Finally, Las Palmas ended a two-month wait for a win in La Liga, edging out 10-man Real Betis 1-0 on Quique Setien’s return to Gran Canaria.

Las Palmas went into the game looking for their third Coach of the season after they dismissed Pako Ayestaran earlier in the week, yet Jonathan Calleri’s finish on 19 minutes left Betis without a victory in six and Setien a far cry from his comforts in the Canary Islands.
