Asenjo returns after 9 months out

Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo returned to action for the first time in nine months in Thursday’s Copa Del Rey victory over Ponferradina.

The 28-year-old tore his cruciate ligament for the fourth time in his career during his side’s defeat to Real Madrid in February earlier this year.

After three tears in his right knee, it was his left knee which gave way during the match at Estadio de la Ceramica but he has now returned to action for the Yellow Submarine.

Asenjo marked his return with a clean sheet as a double from Cedric Bakambu and a strike from Carlos Bacca won the game 3-0 for the hosts, who turned around a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.
