Real Sociedad boss Eusebio Sacristan has apologised to the club’s fans after their shock exit to third-tier Lleida in the Copa del Rey.
La Real were 2-0 up and seemingly cruising, until Lleida – 11th in their Segunda B group –launched a second-half comeback of Goliath proportions to not only win 3-2 but reach the last 16 on goal difference.
“It’s very painful, a very big blow,” the Coach said after the game.
“We haven’t responded to expectations, so we apologise to the fans. It’s hard and painful to take.
“We wanted to compete well on all fronts, but we didn’t play well in the second half and we paid dearly.
“They were a very tough team to face and we have to get back on track as soon as possible. We’re very disappointed.”
Next up for the Basques is a tricky trip to Atletico Madrid on Sunday, with Los Colchoneros having yet to lose in La Liga this season.
