Berizzo undergoes cancer surgery

Sevilla Coach Eduardo Berizzo will undergo surgery on Tuesday to remove a tumour only a week after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The 48-year-old’s assistant Ernesto Marcucci will take over first-team duties in his absence, although there are no plans for the Argentine to leave his post.

Since the players became aware of the tactician’s illness, they have posted two remarkable comebacks – drawing 3-3 with Liverpool after trailing 3-0 at half time, before coming from two goals down to win at Villarreal.

“Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo will undergo surgery on Tuesday afternoon for the prostate adenocarcinoma that was diagnosed several days ago,” read a statement on Sevilla’s website.

“The return of the Argentinian coach to the Sevilla FC bench will depend on the surgery and his post-operation recovery.

“Sevilla FC trust that his return will be as soon as possible. His second in command, Ernesto Marcucci will take his place in the bench.”
