Plans have been shelved to trial goal line technology system VAR for Atletico Madrid’s Copa Del Rey clash with Elche this week.

The clash at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium was due to include the video technology system but Marca report the Spanish FA have now pulled such plans.

The report continues that there is still ‘potential’ for the goal line system to be used in later rounds in the competition, but its debut in Spain will not be happening this week.

Goal line technology has once again been in the headlines in Spain after Lionel Messi’s effort was spilt over the line by Valencia goalkeeper Norberto Neto on Sunday, but no goal was awarded.

La Liga is the only one of Europe’s top five leagues not to use VAR, although there are reports it will be implemented from the start of next season.
