Simeone: Strikers back to their best

Diego Simeone felt Atletico Madrid’s forwards were “back to their best” during Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing of Levante in La Liga.

Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann each helped themselves to a brace each against Legante as Atleti leapfrogged Real Madrid into third place and Simeone finally won his first game at the Ciutat de Valencia.

“We grew in terms of intensity, pressure, chances…” the Coach said after the match.

“Our forwards looked back to their best, especially Griezmann and Gameiro, but Correa’s work was also very good, as was Torres’.

“The team are calmer and our spirit is being replenished. I don’t know what’s triggered it, but it excites us and gives us positive energy to keep improving.

“I’ll stick with the work of the group. We keep improving, with the desire to avoid standing still.

“All my players, older and younger, are making it more and more complicated for me to pick the team.

“I’m damned if I do, damned if I don’t. if I put in Torres and it doesn’t work out, I’ll be criticised and it’s the same with Gameiro.

“Still, the group are pushing hard and I like that. It excites me. Less pressure? We’re fresher because we’re playing better and the strikers are calmer.

“They now have a better understanding of how to hurt their opponents. Griezmann had enough chances before his goals. You could sense that we’d have a good game.”
