Hierro returns to Spanish FA role

Former Spain and Real Madrid defender Fernando Hierro has been appointed as the new sporting director for The Spanish Football Association.

The 49-year-old previously held the role for four years between 2007 and 2011, in a spell which saw the national team lift both the European Championship and the World Cup.

However, Hierro was never replaced in the role but the Spanish FA confirmed on its website on Thursday he has now returned to the position.

The former defender was assistant coach at Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti between 2014 and 2015 before managing La Liga 123 side Real Oviedo last season, but he left the club in June by mutual consent.
