La Liga Wk12: No stopping Valencia

Valencia made history in their win at Espanyol in Sunday’s Week 12 action, but their former Coach wrote the wrong kind with Las Palmas.

However, kicking off the day were Malaga, who beat Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 for their second straight home win.

The Andalusians had to work hard for their victory as Lucas Perez and Fabian Schar put Depor 2-1 up, cancelling out Roberto Rosales’ opener.

Nonetheless, Chory Castro and a first goal of the season for Swansea City loanee Borja Baston lifted the hosts off the bottom of La Liga and to within a point of safety.

Valencia, meanwhile, left it late to see off Espanyol and stay hot on the toes of Barcelona at the top of the table.

Geoffrey Kondogbia and Santi Mina each scored in a 2-0 win for Los Che, who not only set a club record of eight straight victories but also achieved their best-ever start to a season, with 30 points after just 12 games.

Pako Ayestaran, on the other hand, became the first Coach in La Liga history to lose 13 consecutive matches after Las Palmas’ 2-0 defeat to Levante.

Cheick Doukoure and Jason Remeseiro combined in an eight-minute, second-half spell to leave the islanders bottom of the table, without a League win in two months.

Levante, in stark contrast, ended a similar run of results thanks to their first away win since December 2015.

Finally, Athletic Bilbao extended their winless run to four matches following a 1-1 draw with Villarreal.

Manu Trigueros’ first League goal of the season turned up the heat on Athletic boss Jose Angel Ziganda, but his prayers were answered by Aritz Aduriz with only 13 minutes remaining.
