La Liga Wk11: Athletic in trouble

Athletic Bilbao suffered their third straight defeat on Sunday, but there weren’t such problems for Girona or Villarreal.

Girona were on a high from their historic 2-1 win against Real Madrid a week ago, and it was back to their ‘mini-Liga’ in Week 11 as they travelled to fellow new boys Levante, who sat just one place above them in the table.

Nonetheless, Borja Garcia and a sixth goal of the season for ex-Middlesbrough striker Cristhian Stuani fired the Catalans to a third consecutive victory, despite Enes Unal grabbing a debut goal for the hosts.

Celta Vigo, meanwhile, ended a run of successive defeats after they beat fellow strugglers Athletic 3-1.

Both teams were in dire need of the points, yet Celta raced to a 3-0 lead inside 26 minutes thanks to Sergi Gomez and an Iago Aspas brace.

Los Leones did pull one back through Raul Garcia just before half-time, but they nonetheless stay 15th, leaving Coach Jose Angel Ziganda in a real fight to keep his job.

Real Sociedad came out on top in their Basque derby against Eibar, who went a ninth game without a win.

Willian Jose and Adnan Janzuaj put Eibar out of sight within 28 minutes, before Mikel Oyarzabal killed off the visitors once and for all with a goal almost immediately after the restart.

La Real leapfrog Real Betis into seventh, whereas Los Armeros have not picked up three points since a 1-0 defeat of Leganes on September 15

Finally, Villarreal made it four wins in five League games under Javi Calleja with a routine 2-0 victory over Malaga.

A late brace from Nicola Sansone was enough to move the Yellow Submarine into the top five, while Malaga fell to the bottom, still without a goal on their travels this season.
